Rawson Recreation Reserve's off-leash dog area sits on Knotts Siding Road in the Rawson township, a fenced patch of rural ground in the foothills heading towards Walhalla. It is rustic rather than manicured, and that's part of the appeal: a secure perimeter fence, a quiet country setting, and rarely another dog in sight on a weekday. Baw Baw Shire Council lists it as a designated off-leash area.

The dog setup

The fenced enclosure gives your dog a proper off-lead run without worrying about the surrounding bush, and the entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible. Beyond the fence, this is hilly natural ground rather than a groomed park, so expect mud after rain and wear shoes you don't mind ruining.

The rule set is unusually explicit, which helps in a small community reserve: dogs under effective voice control at all times, a maximum of two dogs per person, and no aggressive dogs, unvaccinated dogs or females in season. Children under eight shouldn't enter the fenced area. No digging, no food or glass inside the fence, owners carry a lead and clean up, and the area is vacated during council maintenance. Nearby Baw Baw National Park is strictly no-dogs, so the reserve is where the off-lead time happens; stick to council reserves and on-lead tracks outside the park boundaries.

Worth knowing

Max: Saturdays, morning and evening, are the busiest stretches. On a weekday afternoon you may well have the whole reserve to yourselves.

Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings and weekday afternoons are the quiet windows, and the trade-off for a country reserve is that you're self-sufficient: bring your own water and bags, as facilities are minimal compared with a suburban dog park. It works well as a leg-stretch stop if you're travelling through the Baw Baw ranges with the dog on board.

The reserve is on Knotts Siding Road in Rawson itself, roughly 30 minutes from Moe as you climb into the ranges. Accessible parking is at the entrance, and the town is small enough that you'll find it without navigation drama.
