Rawson Recreation Reserve's off-leash dog area sits on Knotts Siding Road in Rawson, a fenced, rural patch of ground close to Walhalla in the Baw Baw ranges. It's rustic rather than manicured, but the fencing and clear rule set make it an easy choice for dogs that need a proper off-leash run.

The rules. Dogs must be under effective voice control at all times. Maximum two dogs per person, and dogs that are aggressive, unvaccinated or in season are not permitted. Children under eight should not enter the fenced area. No digging, no food or glass inside the fence, and owners must clean up after their dogs. The park needs to be vacated during council maintenance.

What's there. A fenced off-leash area with wheelchair-accessible parking and entrance. It's a natural, hilly setting rather than a manicured park, so expect mud after rain.

Getting there. The reserve is on Knotts Siding Road in Rawson township itself, roughly 30 minutes from Moe heading into the Baw Baw ranges. Accessible parking is available at the entrance.

Nearby with the dogs. Walhalla's Creek Cottage and High Peaks Cottages in Fumina South are pet-friendly stays within a short drive. Lamezleighs Coffee House & Eatery in Mirboo North has a dog-friendly outdoor garden if you're happy to travel a bit further.

When to go. Saturdays, both morning and evening, are the busiest times. Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings and weekday afternoons are quietest, and on a weekday you may well have the whole reserve to yourself.
