Rathmines Dog Exercise Area

Rathmines Dog Exercise Area takes up the open grass of Rathmines Park on Stilling Street, on land that was once the WWII Catalina flying boat base on Lake Macquarie's western shore. It is a leash-free zone at all times outside scheduled events, and it is a proper run-around space rather than a token pocket of lawn: wide grass, lake views and paved paths looping through the grounds.

The dog setup

The exercise area is unfenced, so this is a recall-ground rather than a secure enclosure. Lake Macquarie City Council lists Rathmines Park as leash-free at all times, except while organised public events or bookings are on, and even off-lead your dog has to stay under effective control. Dogs are strictly kept out of the playground and within 10 metres of any playground equipment or barbecue areas elsewhere in the park. A lead needs to be on for the walk in from the car park until you are inside the zone, and council fines apply for dogs off-lead in on-lead parts of the reserve.

Max: because the boundary is open all the way to the road and the lake edge, keep a proper eye on both until you know how your dog behaves here.

What is on site

Toilets, barbecues and the Catalina plane-themed playground sit alongside the exercise area, and around three kilometres of paved walkways thread through the park grounds. Parking is ample near the park oval. The grass is the draw: it suits ball games and long retrieves that a smaller suburban park cannot handle. The lake edge nearby gives water-loving dogs a paddle option on the way out.

The vibe

Weekday mornings and late afternoons are the quiet windows; weekends pull a steady crowd of local regulars. It suits confident dogs with solid recall, and less so escape artists or nervous new arrivals, since the only containment is your voice and the horizon.

Getting there and parking

Stilling Street, Rathmines, roughly 10 minutes from Toronto and about half an hour from Newcastle. Local buses run through the area, with stops on Fishing Point Road a short walk away.

Close by with the dogs

The Watch House Cafe and Pizzeria on Fishing Point Road welcomes dogs in its outdoor area, an easy walk for coffee or pizza after a run. If you want a fully fenced option instead, Speers Point Fenced Dog Park and Eleebana Croudace Bay Dog Park are both a short drive up the lake. Check the signage when you arrive: if a community event has the park booked, off-leash access is suspended for the day and the on-lead rules apply everywhere.
