Carey Bay Dog Exercise Area

Carey Bay Dog Exercise Area, also known as Puntei Park, is an off-leash reserve on the Hampton Street foreshore with direct access to Lake Macquarie. It is unfenced, so it suits dogs with solid recall more than nervous escape artists.

The rules. Off-leash at all times, but dogs must stay under effective control even without a lead. Pick up and bin all waste. A person aged 16 or over can control a maximum of four dogs at once. Dogs need current registration and microchipping, and must wear an ID collar. Restricted or dangerous breeds are not permitted.

The water. The reserve opens straight onto the calm water of Lake Macquarie, good for a paddle rather than a surf. There is no fence between the grass and the lake, so keep an eye on strong swimmers who might wander further than planned. Water levels shift a little with the lake rather than true ocean tides, and a lower level leaves more bank to play on.

What's there. A large open grassy area for running, some shade trees, and waste bins. There is no water station on site, so bring your own bowl and drinking water plus your own bags as backup.

Getting there. The reserve sits just off Hampton Street in Carey Bay, with parking generally available on the street or in spots next to the reserve. Public transport doesn't run right to the shore, but local buses stop near Lakeview Street and Excelsior Parade, a short walk away.

Nearby with the dogs. Toronto, five to ten minutes' drive away, has several cafes with dog-friendly outdoor seating. The foreshore path also gives you a scenic on-lead walk toward Toronto if you want to extend the outing.

When to go. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are quietest; weekday late afternoons after 4.30pm and weekends get busier. Good for confident swimmers and dogs that do well off-leash around other dogs.
