Carey Bay Dog Exercise Area

Carey Bay Dog Exercise Area, known to locals as Puntei Park, is an off-leash reserve on the Hampton Street foreshore with the water of Lake Macquarie opening straight off the grass. Council designates it leash-free at all times, and the combination of a big unfenced lawn and calm lakeshore makes it a favourite on the western shore for confident, well-trained dogs.

Leash status

Off-leash applies 24/7 across the reserve, but effective control is the council's condition: the dog must come when called and not rush other people or dogs. One person aged 16 or over can handle up to four dogs, dogs need current registration and microchipping, and restricted or dangerous breeds are barred. Carry bags and bin all waste, keep clear of any playground equipment and marked wildlife zones, and remember that straying off-lead beyond the reserve's boundaries risks a fine.

Water and terrain

The lake edge is calm and shallow, made for paddling rather than swimming out deep, though keen swimmers will wander. There is no fence between the grass and the water, so the reserve suits dogs with reliable recall; keep a less reliable dog on a long line near the water's edge. Lake levels shift gently rather than with ocean tides, and a lower lake leaves more bank to play on. The reserve itself is a large open lawn with some shade trees.

Max: unfenced and on a lake means recall matters more than usual here. If the recall is 80 per cent on a good day, run this one on a long line.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits just off Hampton Street in Carey Bay, on the western shore of Lake Macquarie a few minutes south of Toronto. Street parking is generally available on Hampton Street and in the spots beside the reserve. Public transport does not run to the shore, though local buses stop near Lakeview Street and Excelsior Parade for a short walk in.

Worth knowing

There is no water station on site, so bring drinking water and a bowl, plus your own bags as a backup even though bins are provided. Shade is limited to scattered trees, so summer mornings beat midday. The foreshore path out of the reserve makes a scenic on-lead extension towards Toronto if you want to stretch the outing.

When to go

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quiet sessions; weekday late afternoons after 4:30pm and weekends draw the regulars. Sunset over the lake is the appealing but busiest slot. Confident swimmers and socially easy dogs get the most from it.
