Buttaba Dog Exercise Area

Buttaba Dog Exercise Area is a 24-hour off-leash reserve on the foreshore of Lake Macquarie off Ilford Avenue, between Rathmines and Toronto. It is unfenced and open to the water, and quiet enough most days to let a dog properly stretch out on grass and lake edge without a queue for space.

The dog setup

Lake Macquarie City Council lists this as leash-free at all times, seven days a week. Dogs must stay under effective control and voice command, any dog showing aggression is leashed and removed immediately, and waste goes in the bins on site, though bring your own bags. The reserve is unfenced and opens directly onto the lake and residential streets, which matters for recall, so this is a spot for dogs that come back when called. Stick to the open reserve and stay out of any signed sensitive foreshore sections.

Max: the foreshore is tidal and this stretch is unfenced, so check the tide before you commit to a swim. At high tide the shoreline can turn soft and muddy or disappear altogether, and solid recall is non-negotiable near an open water edge.

Worth knowing

There is no toilet block, no lighting and no drinking fountain, so pack water for both ends of the lead. Early morning or late afternoon gives calmer water and a cooler walk, and low tide opens up more usable foreshore for a swim. Weekend mornings draw the most locals, but it rarely feels crowded.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at 65 Ilford Avenue, Buttaba, off Wangi Road, roughly ten minutes from Toronto or Morisset by car. Street parking on Ilford Avenue is generally easy, even on busier mornings. Public transport does not run directly to the reserve, so a car is the practical way in.

While you're out there
