W. R. Larkins Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

W.R. Larkins Reserve is an open green space on Murray Road in Preston, in Melbourne's inner north, running alongside Darebin Creek. The dog off-leash area is unfenced but framed by the creek and the paths around it, and the real draw is the combination: room for the dog to run off-lead, then a longer leashed stretch along the Darebin Creek Trail to finish the walk.

The dog setup

Dogs can run off-leash in the designated area under effective control. Darebin's rules put limits around the edges: leads back on within 10 metres of the playground and on the shared-use Darebin Creek Trail, within 30 metres of the barbecues, and during any formal sport sessions. Carry a leash at all times, use the bags and bins provided on site, and remove your dog promptly if it turns aggressive. Signage carries the current conditions, so give it a read when you arrive.

Because nothing is fenced, this suits dogs with a reliable recall rather than flight risks. If you need an escape-proof option, the fully fenced off-lead area at Edwardes Lake Park in Reservoir is a short drive north.

The vibe

This is a neighbourhood reserve rather than a destination park: a spread-out playground, barbecues and picnic tables, drinking fountains, established trees for shade and public toilets. The Dunstan Park Tennis Club's courts sit alongside, so weekends have a steady background of sport and family noise. Ground near the creek gets boggy after rain, but the upper grass drains well enough to stay usable.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via Murray Road off Plenty Road or Albert Street, with street parking around the reserve edges. The 86 tram along Plenty Road stops within a short walk down Murray Road, and the Darebin Creek Trail runs straight through the reserve for anyone arriving on foot or by bike.

When to go

Weekend mornings between about 8 and 11 and weekday late afternoons from 4 to 6 are the busy stretches. For a nervous dog or a young one still learning the ropes, weekday late mornings are far more relaxed. If you want to keep exploring, the G.H.
