Patterson Road Off-Leash Area at Lilydale Lake

This is the Patterson Road access to the off-leash grassland on the north-west side of Lillydale Lake: a large open green space with mature trees for shade, gravel paths, and Olinda Creek running close by for a paddle. It is the same lake circuit, reached from the quieter Patterson Road side rather than the main entrance.

The rules. Dogs may run off-leash here under effective voice control, but they must be on-lead in the car parks and in the lake's picnic, barbecue, playground and beach areas. The sandy beach is off-limits to dogs. Carry a lead and clean up; bins are provided.

What's there. Open grass with room to run, perimeter seating, waste bins, and creek access along the edge for water. Bring your own bowl, as there is no dedicated dog tap in this zone.

Getting there. From Melbourne take the Maroondah Highway onto Swansea Road; the nearest parking is the north-west or north-east car park off Swansea Road rather than the main lake entrance. It is roughly a 1.5 to 2 km walk from Lilydale Station.

Nearby with the dogs. the Lilydale General has a fenced dog-friendly courtyard, and Lilydale Pine Hill Caravan Park is about eight minutes away for a pet-friendly stay.

Weekday mornings are the calmest. Weekend mornings and late weekday afternoons are busiest and the main car park fills quickly, so the Patterson Road side is the faster way in. Good for dogs who like an open run with a creek to cool off in.
