Patterson Road Off-Leash Area at Lilydale Lake

The Patterson Road access covers the off-leash grassland on the north-west side of Lillydale Lake: a large open green space with mature shade trees, gravel paths and Olinda Creek running along the edge for a paddle. It is the same lake reserve as always, reached from the quieter side rather than the busy main entrance, and that difference matters on weekends when the main car park fills.

The dog setup

Dogs run off-leash in the designated zone under effective voice control. The area is unfenced, bordered by the creek, gravel shared paths and open grass rather than any gate or perimeter, so recall needs to be real before you unclip. Outside the zone the rules tighten: leads on in the car parks, on the main shared trail and in the general parkland, and dogs are prohibited altogether from the beach, playgrounds, barbecue and picnic areas and the fitness equipment. Carry a lead, clean up immediately, and note the bins are provided but there is no dedicated dog tap in this zone, so bring your own bowl and water.

Max: The creek along the edge is the reward here. Just keep an eye on dogs who treat moving water as an invitation; it is unfenced all the way down.

Worth knowing

Amenities are simple: open grass with room to run, perimeter seating and waste bins. Weekday mornings are the calm stretch, while weekend mornings and late weekday afternoons get busy and the main car park struggles. Good fit for dogs who like an open run with a creek to cool off in.

Getting there and parking

From Melbourne, take the Maroondah Highway onto Swansea Road and aim for the north-west or north-east car park off Swansea Road rather than the main lake entrance. Lilydale Station is roughly a 1.5 to 2 kilometre walk away if you would rather arrive on foot.
