Inner North Dog Park

Inner North Dog Park on Fairfax Street in O'Connor is the inner north's dedicated fenced dog park, and one of the better set up enclosures in Canberra. Two separate fenced yards split large dogs from small or timid ones, mature eucalypts shade the big-dog area, and the crowd of regulars that use it daily gives it the feel of a genuine neighbourhood hub rather than a bare paddock.

The dog setup

Both enclosures are fully fenced with double-gate entries, so dogs go off-lead the moment they are through the gate. The large-dog yard has established shade trees and a mix of grass and woodchip; the small-dog yard is more open and mostly woodchip. Water fountains for dogs and humans, benches and shelters cover the comfort side. ACT rules apply as anywhere off-lead: your dog stays under effective control and close supervision at all times, you carry a lead, waste goes in the bins, and a dog showing aggression is removed immediately.

Park etiquette here matters more than at most parks because it is busy: keep moving away from the entrance after you come in, since dogs bunching at the gate is the classic flashpoint for scuffles. Food and toys are best left out of the enclosures to avoid resource guarding, and no dog should be left unattended.

Max: let the pack spread out before you unclip. The gate is where tension starts, and two seconds of patience avoids most of it.

Worth knowing

The park typically runs from 6am to 9pm daily. Weekday late afternoons and weekend mornings are the busy shifts, which suits social, confident dogs; nervous ones will prefer a weekday mid-morning. The ground turns muddy after rain, and some patches in the yards are rocky or carry burrs, so a quick paw check on the way out is a good habit.

Getting there and parking

The park is at 41 Fairfax Street, O'Connor, with a gravel car park on site that can be uneven in wet weather. It sits close to the O'Connor shops, so locals walk and everyone else drives in from Bruce Highway-side streets in a few minutes.

The O'Connor shops are minutes away: Sly Fox Coffee on MacArthur Avenue is the neighbourhood coffee stop with outdoor seating.
