Zillah Crawcour Park

Zillah Crawcour Park sits on the Barwon River bank at 2 Deviation Road in Newtown, Geelong, just off the Queens Park bridge end of the river corridor. It is one of the quieter pockets of the riverside chain: a small grassed reserve tucked under the trees between the water and the road, close enough to the shared path to hear the bike traffic but far enough off it to feel removed. For a suburb that is otherwise built around its river frontage, it works as the low-key alternative to the busier parkland upstream.

Under the City of Greater Geelong's Dog Controls in Public Places Policy, the park is classified as off leash conditional: dogs may be off leash in the designated zones along the Barwon River shared path corridor provided they remain under effective control. Conditional is the operative word. It is not a blanket off-leash declaration, so parts of the corridor can switch to on-leash depending on signage and the zone you are standing in, and the shared path itself expects a dog under close control with cyclists coming through. Read the signs at the entrance before unclipping rather than assuming the whole riverside runs to one rule. Because the reserve is small, sessions here suit short, focused play rather than the long-range fetching the bigger river parks upstream absorb easily.

The draw is the river setting: water along one side, tree cover across the reserve, and the walking network that threads Newtown and Queens Park along the bank. The ground slopes toward the river in places, so it is worth keeping a dog that likes to swim within sight, and the path edges are where the leash matters most. Early morning and late afternoon are the calm windows; weekends bring river-path traffic through the corridor, which is the main thing a reactive dog owner needs to plan around.
