Killara Off-Leash Dog Area (Unfenced)

Killara Park, also known as W.A. Bert Oldfield Oval, is an unfenced off-leash dog area at 77 Springdale Road in Killara: an open grass sports oval ringed by native trees and neighbouring streets. The defining fact is the missing fence, so this is a venue for dogs with immediate, reliable recall and nothing less.

The rules

Ku-ring-gai Council allows off-leash daily from 3pm through to 11am the next morning, with dogs back on leash between 11am and 3pm. The oval is a shared sportsground, so when organised sport, training or council maintenance is underway the off-leash window is suspended regardless of the clock. Dogs must be under effective control of a competent handler at all times, waste goes straight in the bins provided, and dogs stay away from the nearby playground equipment. Leash on the moment you enter or leave the oval.

What's there

A large free car park sits directly beside the oval, and a children's playground nearby needs a wide berth from any dog, on or off lead. Expect dew on the grass if you come early. The oval sits within surrounding parkland, so there is room for an on-lead warm-up lap around the boundary.

Max: no fence means no margin for error. If your dog will not recall immediately with cars and other dogs nearby, build that skill somewhere enclosed before coming here.

Getting there

The address is 77 Springdale Road, Killara, in the Ku-ring-gai Council area. Most people drive and use the large free car park next to the oval. Killara station is walkable but a decent hike, so driving is the practical choice.

Close by with the dogs

If you need a genuine fence, St Ives Showground Fenced Dog Park is a short drive away with two enclosed rings. For coffee afterwards, Cafe Feoh in Lindfield is one station north and The Wyatt in Gordon one station south.
