Horn Park Dog Off Leash Area

Horn Park, formally Dr Alex Horn Park, sits on Ruthven Street North in Harlaxton on Toowoomba's northern side, and it is one of the larger off-leash spaces in the region: open, rolling grassy hills with room for a proper run. The catch is the fencing, or rather the lack of it, so this is a park for dogs with solid recall.

The dog setup

The area is unfenced, with wide undulating lawns, scattered shade trees and linking paths. Dogs must be on leash arriving and leaving, then under effective voice control once released. There is no dedicated water station, so carry your own bowl and water.

Off-leash access covers most of the park but excludes the south-west section and the ground immediately south of the Bridge Club, so read the signage before letting your dog loose near those corners. The park runs alongside a main road, which concentrates the mind nicely.

The vibe

Locals come for the elevated views, particularly at sunset, and for fetch across the open fields. The lawns are generally well maintained but can go muddy after heavy rain. Benches and picnic tables are spread along the paths, and the crowd skews towards regulars with well-socialised dogs.

After school and on weekend mornings are the busiest windows, with a steady rotation of ball-chasers and young dogs burning energy. The top of the hill gives you the best sightlines to keep track of a dog that likes to range.

Max: this is a recall test, not a romper room. Stay clear of the south-west boundary near the Bridge Club, and if your dog's recall is a work in progress, the fenced park down the road is the better call.

Getting there

The park fronts Ruthven Street, the main northbound road into Toowoomba, in Harlaxton QLD 4350. Street parking is available on the side roads near the entrances, and Toowoomba bus routes travel along Ruthven Street if you are not driving.
