Harlaxton Dog off-leash area

Harlaxton's fenced off-leash area lives inside Ruthven Street North Reserve, under Toowoomba Regional Council, and the two separate enclosures are the reason to pick it over a single open field. Dogs without rock-solid recall get a real option here rather than a gamble on whoever else turns up.

The dog setup

Two fenced yards let you separate dogs by size or temperament: a boisterous runner can burn off energy in one while a smaller or shyer dog takes the other. The perimeter is secure, there is a water tap with a dog bowl attachment, and mature trees plus benches cover both shade and somewhere to sit. The reserve is generally well kept, with bins and information signage at the entry.

Leads stay on in the car park and across the surrounding parkland; off-leash applies inside the fenced zones only. Owners need effective voice control at all times, dogs should wear a collar and tag, waste goes straight in the bin, and dogs must not menace other dogs or people. Any dog that cannot play politely goes back on the lead.

Worth knowing

Pepsi: two fenced yards is the whole trick. A boisterous dog burns energy in one enclosure while a shyer one gets the other to itself. No awkward negotiations required.

The reserve is not on a high-frequency bus route, so driving is the practical choice for most visitors, and the entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible. Weekday mornings from around 6 to 8am and late afternoons from 4 to 6pm draw the regulars, and weekends are busier still, so mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday is the quiet window if your dog prefers calm company.

The reserve sits on Ruthven Street North in Harlaxton, with free off-street parking on site, which takes the usual kerbside hunt out of the visit.
