W. L Simpson Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

W. L Simpson Reserve on Fewster Road is a flat, open grass reserve in the middle of Hampton where dogs can run off leash under Bayside City Council rules. It is a plain neighbourhood oval rather than a built dog park, and that simplicity is exactly its appeal: room to throw a ball, stretch a dog's legs, and let them mooch around with the regulars.

The dog setup

Dogs are allowed off leash across the reserve, with one standing exception: they must be on leash within 20 metres of any organised sport, training or organised activity when it is on. Bayside's off leash rules apply everywhere else, provided your dog stays under effective control and you carry a leash. Council rules also cap it at four dogs per person, and dogs belong on leash in the car park.

The reserve is not fully fenced, so reliable recall matters here. Gates have been known to sit open, and the boundaries run along quiet residential streets. If your dog is still working on coming back when called, keep to the middle of the grass rather than the edges, or pick one of Bayside's fenced parks instead.

What's on site

There is bench seating through the reserve, dog waste bins, and a water tap, so you can cover the basics without packing the car. A playground and the Hampton Community Centre sit alongside, and street parking runs along Fewster Road on the southern side. The Sandringham line's Hampton Station is a short walk away, which makes this an easy stop on a rail-side walk.

Max: no fences, no fuss, just a big patch of grass and a bowl of water by the tap. Fine by me as long as the ball keeps coming.

While you're out there

If the reserve is crowded with sport, R J Sillitoe Reserve is the natural backup, also off leash and a few streets over. For a coffee afterwards, Merrymen on Small Street welcomes dogs at its outdoor tables, and Hampton Street's cafe strip is a short walk away. Keen walkers can string the visit together with the Sandringham Jetty to Ricketts Point walk along the bay.
