Clonlea Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Clonlea Reserve holds Gawler's main fenced off-leash dog park, set on the banks of the North Para River at Willaston on the northern side of town. It is fully enclosed with separate large-dog and small-dog runs, which makes it the go-to secure run in the area.

The rules

Inside the enclosure dogs run free while staying under your voice or visual control, and you stay in the park with them. Work the double airlock gates properly: wait for the first gate to shut before opening the second, every time. Pick up after your dog and use the bins provided, and leash up and leave immediately if a dog turns rough. Beyond the fence line, the wider reserve is on-leash.

What is there

The enclosure has a drinking fountain with a tilt-tray dog bowl, sheltered seating for owners, and grassed mounds and feature logs for the dogs to work over. The dedicated small-dog section gives puppies and little breeds a safe space away from the big runners, and solar lighting extends the usable hours.

The surrounding reserve adds BBQs, picnic tables, public toilets, a playground and the North Para River walking trail, so the visit can stretch well beyond a quick off-leash session.

Max: sort gate discipline before you unclip the lead. Two airlock gates only work if both shut behind you, no matter how keen the dog is.

Getting there

The park sits on Murray Road, Willaston, with on-site parking at the reserve. Gawler Central station is roughly a 20 to 30 minute walk away, so the train plus a stroll works if you are coming without a car.

Worth knowing

The grass and open ground heat up through an Adelaide summer. On extreme-heat days, come at dawn or dusk once the surface has cooled and skip midday entirely.

Close by with the dogs

Gawler's main street cafes welcome dogs at outdoor tables, including The Javahut and Cafe Nova. The dedicated Gawler Small Dog Park is the other fenced option if you have a little dog who prefers quieter company.

When to go

The reserve is open 24 hours, and the enclosure is liveliest on weekend mornings when the regular crowd rolls in. Weekday middays stay calm, which suits dogs still building their park manners.
