Harleston Park Dog Off Leash Area

Harleston Park is a leafy residential park on Glen Eira Road in Elsternwick with a shared off-leash arrangement rather than a dedicated dog park. One fact decides your visit: dogs are only off-leash between 6am and 9am, and the park is not fully fenced, so it suits dogs with reliable recall.

The dog setup

Under Glen Eira City Council rules, off-leash time runs only from 6am to 9am, and only in the outer green spaces away from the playground and picnic shelters. Outside that window the lead stays on, at no more than 1.5 metres. Even during off-leash hours, a 20-metre on-leash buffer applies around barbecues, playgrounds, picnic areas and any active sporting use. Keep your dog under effective voice control, carry a lead, and bin the waste. There is usually a bag dispenser, but bring your own as backup.

Max: no fence and a hard 9am cut-off, so keep the recall sharp. The 6am to 7.30am slot is the quietest if your dog needs space.

The vibe

This is a neighbourhood park first and a dog space second: picnic shelters and benches, a separate playground, a water tap and good lighting for early starts. The crowd is locals fitting a session in before work and school, which makes it friendly but time-boxed. The busiest stretch is the run-up to 9am, with 8am to 9am on weekends the peak of all.

The park is at 227-229 Glen Eira Road, Elsternwick. Free street parking is available along Glen Eira Road, Bambra Road and the surrounding residential streets, and it is a short walk from Elsternwick Railway Station and the Glen Eira Road bus stops.

While you're out there

If the 9am cut-off lands mid-session, the big open expanses of Elsternwick Park Lakeside Green are minutes away over the boundary in Brighton, and the enclosed Sandown Street dog beach adds a swim. Carter Lovett is a nearby cafe stop for the post-park coffee.
