Methven Park is a compact, heritage-listed community park in Brunswick East with mature trees, garden beds and open lawn, and it runs as an off-leash area for dogs. It is a neighbourhood green space rather than a big running oval, which suits a shorter local outing more than a long fetch session.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash under effective voice control. Keep your dog on-leash in the surrounding streets and near any playground zone. Bags are not always supplied, so carry your own and pick up. This is a shared family park, so a well-socialised dog that reads a crowd will fit in best.

What's there. Benches, picnic settings and a barbecue area, a drinking fountain with a dog bowl, a small playground, public toilets and lit paved paths.

Getting there. The park is at 7 Methven Street. Street parking on Methven Street and the side streets is limited. The 96 tram on Nicholson Street stops a 5 to 7 minute walk away, and the 504 and 506 buses run nearby.

Nearby with the dogs. Bellboy Cafe on Nicholson Street has a spacious outdoor terrace, and the East Brunswick Village precinct nearby has dog-friendly outdoor areas including Bridge Road Brewery. If Methven is too busy, Fleming Park is a short move away for more room.

Weekday mid-morning or mid-afternoon gives you the most open space; weekend mornings and weekday evenings are the busiest. Good for a social dog on a quiet local walk.
