Methven Park Dog Off Leash Area

Methven Park is a compact, heritage-listed community park in Brunswick East, with mature trees, garden beds and open lawn running as an off-leash dog area. It is a neighbourhood green space rather than a big running oval, which suits a shorter local outing more than a full fetch session.

The dog setup

Dogs are off-leash across the park under Merri-bek City Council rules, provided they stay in sight and under effective voice control. There is no fencing, so keep the lead on in the surrounding streets and near the playground zone. Bag dispensers are not always stocked, so carry your own and pick up. Because this is a shared family park with a playground and picnic tables, a well-socialised dog that reads a crowd will fit in best.

The vibe

Think quiet local walk rather than dog-park chaos. Benches, picnic settings and a barbecue area ring the lawn, there is a small playground and public toilets, and lit paved paths keep the park usable into the evening. Weekday mid-morning or mid-afternoon gives you the most open space, while weekend mornings and weekday evenings are the busiest windows.

The park sits at 7 Methven Street, Brunswick East. Street parking on Methven Street and the side streets is limited, so public transport is the easier option: the 96 tram on Nicholson Street stops a 5 to 7 minute walk away, and the 504 and 506 buses run nearby.

Close by with the dogs

The East Brunswick Village precinct nearby has several dog-friendly outdoor areas, and Big Sister Cafe welcomes dogs in its outdoor seating. If Methven feels crowded, Fleming Park is a short move down the hill with more room to run, and Jones Park offers another off-leash patch in the same suburb.
