Hedges Avenue Off Leash Dog Park, known locally as The Pit, is a grassy off-leash reserve on Hedges Avenue between Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach. It is a social, open-field park with mature shade trees, popular with regulars and a short walk back from the beachfront.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash within the designated grassy area, but must be under effective voice control. The park is not fully fenced from the road, so reliable recall matters here, especially near the Hedges Avenue side. Dogs must be back on-leash in the surrounding pedestrian areas and on the beach walkway. Clean up after your dog, bag dispensers are usually on hand.

What's there. Water fountains and bowls, shaded seating for owners, wheelchair-accessible entry, and public restrooms nearby. The shade tree cover is a real plus in summer.

Getting there. The park runs along Hedges Avenue between the beach and the housing. Free street parking is available but fills during peak hours, so you may need to park a short walk away. It is reachable by local bus routes along the Gold Coast Highway or a walk from the Broadbeach South G:link tram station.

Nearby with the dogs. Rafiki by the Sea on Hedges Avenue does coffee, toasties and dog biscuits, and Banksy Bar & Kitchen a little further along is a well-known dog-friendly cafe for a post-park brunch.

When to go. Weekday evenings and Friday evening through Saturday morning are the busiest social windows. For a quieter run, aim for Tuesday or Sunday evenings. The sun gets intense, so late afternoon is a cooler, popular time, and bring water even though taps are on site.

No perimeter fence on the road side means a bolting dog can reach traffic fast. If recall is a work in progress, keep to the far side away from Hedges Avenue.
