What visitors mention
Missingham Park Off Leash Area sits on the Richmond River foreshore at the Ballina Spit, a designated off-leash zone where the draw is calm, shallow river water rather than open surf. It is one of the few spots in town where a dog can paddle, dig and swim straight off a sandy bank, a short walk from the Ballina CBD.
The rules. Dogs run off-leash only within the marked riverbank zone; in the surrounding parkland, pathways and car parks they must be on-leash. Keep your dog under effective voice control, clean up after it (bins are provided), and keep it away from local wildlife. Dangerous, menacing and restricted breeds are not permitted in the off-leash area.
What's there. Drinking water and some shaded spots are on hand, with parking next to the Missingham Bridge boat ramp. The CBD is close enough to grab a coffee before or after.
The water. This is river, not surf, so the water stays calm and shallow. At low tide the sand opens up for walking and gives nervous dogs an easy wade. At high tide the off-leash strip narrows and suits dogs that would rather swim straight off the bank.
Getting there. The area runs near the corner of Kingsford Smith Drive and Bentinck Street, Ballina 2478. There is off-street parking by the boat ramp, and local bus routes stop on the main road within walking distance.
Nearby with the dogs. The Wharf Bar & Restaurant is close by on the river with dog-friendly outdoor seating, and the riverside walking path links the whole foreshore for an on-leash stroll.

When to go. Early mornings and late afternoons are the social peak; weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends. Aim for low tide if your dog is a wader rather than a swimmer. Good for water-loving dogs who like a calm, no-surf paddle.
