Kingsford Smith dog park

Kingsford Smith dog park runs along the Richmond River on Kingsford Smith Drive in Ballina, a few minutes from the town centre. It is an unfenced stretch of grass, shade trees and river frontage, which makes it less a dedicated dog park and more a riverside reserve where off-leash exercise is allowed. Good for a casual walk or a leg-stretch off the highway, with water for a swim at the right tide.

Off-leash status

Ballina Shire Council designates this riverfront space as an off-leash exercise area, with dogs required to stay under effective control and supervision at all times. Because the space is open toward the water, shared paths and nearby roads, solid recall matters before the lead comes off. When the adjoining sports fields are in use for organised sport, dogs go back on leash. Keep clear of leashed dogs, small children and anyone who looks uneasy around dogs, and bring your own bags, since cleanup is on you.

What's there and in the water

The park has public toilets, picnic tables, barbecues, bins, a children's playground and paved paths along the river. There are no dedicated dog water fountains, so pack water on warm days. The river frontage changes with the tide: high tide gives deeper water for a swim off the bank, while low tide opens sandy flats for sniffing and digging. The water is calm by Ballina standards, but keep an eye on currents near the main channel.

Getting there and parking

The park sits on Kingsford Smith Drive, reached easily via River Street from the town centre. On-street parking runs along the drive, and the reserve links into Ballina's shared path network, so you can walk or ride in from town. From the Pacific Highway turn-off it is only a few minutes, which makes this an easy stop on the drive through.

When to go

Early weekday mornings are the calmest window. Things pick up on Saturdays and on Monday and Tuesday evenings when sport is on the fields. If your dog needs space or the fields are in use, either keep the lead on or come back at a quieter hour.

Close by with the dogs

For a fully fenced run, Compton Dog Park in East Ballina is the suburb's purpose-built option with agility gear and water stations, and Missingham Park Off Leash Area is further along the same drive with sand and shallows. Afterwards, Swish Cafe in town has dog-friendly outdoor seating, and the Seven Mile Beach dog beach at Lennox Head is fifteen minutes north.
