Coffee & Kitchen Main Street sits at 77 River Street in the middle of Ballina's main strip, opening at 6am every day of the week and closing at 2pm. It is a compact specialty coffee shop rather than a full restaurant, built for quick, well-made breakfasts and coffee, with footpath seating out front where dogs settle in beside their people. If you are walking the Richmond River path or heading to the beach, it is a natural first stop.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor footpath seating, on leash, and there is reasonable space out front so dogs are not squeezed against passing foot traffic. The team is relaxed around dogs, water bowls are usually offered on request and a pat is generally part of the service. Inside is for assistance animals only, which is standard for NSW food premises. There is no dedicated dog menu, but the welcome is genuine and consistent.

The vibe

The coffee is locally roasted and the food leans fresh and simple: breakfast items, toasties such as roasted pumpkin and halloumi on Turkish bread, the popular ham and cheese croissant, and house-made baked goods with gluten-free and dairy-free options. Reviews consistently single out the staff for being friendly, which matters when you are managing a dog and a coffee order at once. For a longer sit-down brunch, the sister venue at 44 Links Avenue in East Ballina is the larger, full-service option.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along River Street directly out front, with side streets and riverbank car parks nearby. It is walkable from much of central Ballina, and the town's riverside paths start within a couple of minutes on foot.

Make a day of it

Ballina Shire's best-known dog exercise ground is Missingham Park Off Leash Area on Kingsford Smith Drive, where dogs can run on the sand and splash at the river mouth; keep the leash on through the parklands until you reach the designated zone. Kingsford Smith dog park and Compton Dog Park in East Ballina are other options, and Bertie's food and drink is another cafe worth knowing in town.
