Assistance Dog Relief Area

The Assistance Dog Relief Area at Ballarat Railway Station is a small, council-built toileting space for guide and assistance dogs, set up by the City of Ballarat so handlers have a known spot at a busy transport hub. It sits on Doveton Street South in Ballarat Central, in the CBD green space beside the station precinct, and was developed with the council's Disability Advisory Committee.

The dog setup

This is purpose-built for accredited guide dogs and assistance dogs working with their handlers, not a general off-leash or exercise area. The point is to give working dogs a safe, appropriate place to relieve themselves without handlers having to search for one or field complaints in public. Handlers clean up after their dogs using the dedicated bin on site. Accredited guide, hearing and approved assistance dogs are exempt from council registration fees under Victorian legislation, with the exemption applied through the City of Ballarat.

Max: this is what the space is for. A working dog gets a quiet, defined spot to relieve itself before a train trip, which is genuinely hard to find in a CBD.

What's there

The setup is practical rather than recreational: a protective shelter with seating for handlers, partial fencing to define the boundary, accessible pathways, a drinking fountain donated by Central Highlands Water and a dedicated rubbish bin. It is compact by design, a stop-and-go facility rather than a place to linger.

Getting there and parking

The area sits in the Ballarat Railway Station precinct on Doveton Street South, which makes it easy to use when arriving or departing by train. The station's car park and surrounding CBD parking are both close, and Lydiard Street's shops and cafes are a short walk north.

Close by with the dogs

For pet dogs, the Sturt Street gardens and Lake Wendouree are the better-known options nearby for a walk. Pennyweight Park in Ballarat East is the closest fenced off-leash ground, and Victoria Park is the big open option west of the CBD. The Turret Cafe is a coffee stop in the centre.
