A heritage-fronted cafe at 701 Sturt Street, right on the central median gardens, The Turret does breakfast and lunch with a calm street-side setup that suits a dog parked at your feet.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome at the pavement seating out front on Sturt Street. There is no courtyard, so it is footpath dining only and dogs stay outside. Staff are used to dogs and tend to be accommodating, but bring your own collapsible bowl rather than counting on one.

Good to know. The kitchen leans into the classics, sourdough toast, toasties, eggs benedict and house pies, with coffee that holds up. It gets busy through the weekend brunch window, so a quieter weekday morning is easier with a dog in tow.

Getting there. It sits on Sturt Street in the heart of the CBD. Street parking runs right out front but fills fast, so the side streets are your backup. The Sturt Street gardens are a few steps away for a pre-coffee leg stretch.

Best with a dog on a weekday morning when the footpath tables are free. Good for a quick central stop between a Lake Wendouree walk and the shops.
