Victoria Park - dog park

Victoria Park's dog area in Newington, on Ballarat's western side, is a large open off-leash zone inside one of the city's biggest reserves. The defining feature is the duck pond, which gives the space a different feel to a standard flat oval, and the whole area is unfenced, so recall skills genuinely matter.

The dog setup

Dogs are permitted off lead in the designated dog area and must stay under effective voice control at all times. Outside that zone, particularly near playgrounds and the non-off-leash parts of Victoria Park, leads are required.

Waste bags and bins are provided on site, and the unfenced boundaries plus the resident ducks mean a long line is the smart call until you trust your dog's response to a call.

The vibe

The reserve mixes formal ovals with natural terrain and established shade trees, and the pond draws water-loving dogs on warm days, so bring a towel for the trip home. Water points are set out through the grounds, though a collapsible bowl is still handy in summer.

Beyond the dog area there are public toilets, barbecue and picnic shelters, walking tracks and sports ovals, so the visit works for households with mixed plans. The park is large enough to find a quieter corner even at peak times.

Getting there

The reserve sits on Ballarat's western fringe with street parking free around the perimeter, including the Lydiard Street North and Sturt Street sides. Bus routes through Wendouree and Newington work if you are coming by public transport.

When to go

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quiet stretches. Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings draw the biggest crowds, which suits social dogs but can overwhelm anxious ones.
