West End Cafe

West End Cafe is a compact breakfast and lunch counter at 17 Charles Street, Wickham, directly opposite the Wickham Transport Interchange on the inner-city side of Newcastle. It is a commuter cafe in the true sense: doors open 5:30am on weekdays, coffee moves fast, and dogs are accommodated rather than tolerated.

The space is tight, it runs out of a small display-style suite, so on a busy weekday morning the outdoor side or a quiet corner is the realistic choice. No dedicated water bowls or dog treats are confirmed on site, so carry your own. Weekend travellers note the doors: Monday to Friday 5:30am to 2pm, closed weekends.

Worth knowing

The menu is built for the grab-and-go trade: bacon and egg rolls, ham and cheese croissants, the popular Chicken Jalapeno wrap, Southern Fried Schnitzel and a falafel option, plus brownies, cookies and protein balls in the cabinet. Coffee, dirty chai and teas cover the drinks. Street parking on the surrounding Wickham streets gets competitive in the morning peak, which is another reason the interchange-side location works, arrive on foot with the dog already exercised.

Close by with the dogs

The Throsby Creek foreshore path starts within walking distance and is on-lead along the boardwalk, but it connects to leash-free pockets at Islington Park up the creek line, with the City of Newcastle allowing off-lead exercise in designated reserves between sunrise and sunset.
