The Dugout Cafe Newcastle

The Dugout Cafe sits within the RSL LifeCare village on King Street in Newcastle West, a community-focused cafe that is fully open to the public. It is a low-key local favourite for coffee and lunch, with an easy outdoor setup for dogs out front.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating area at the front of the cafe, on lead and well settled. Staff are friendly toward dogs and water is usually available on request, though it is worth bringing your own bowl. Because the cafe is part of a retirement village setting, keep your dog calm and close to the table as residents and visitors move through.

The vibe and the menu

The offering is simple and done well: quality barista-made coffee, house-made sandwiches, small plates and fresh salads, including a Mexican halloumi salad that regulars come back for. There is a solid vegetarian selection, and the room is wheelchair accessible and kid friendly. Hours run Monday to Friday 8am to 2pm, closed weekends, so this is a weekday coffee-and-lunch stop rather than a brunch destination.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is at 510 King Street, Newcastle West. Paid street parking runs along King Street and the nearby blocks, and the Newcastle Interchange is within walking distance, so train or light rail into the city works if you are coming from further afield with a well-travelled dog.

Floozy Coffee on Parry Street is the other Newcastle West dog-friendly pick. For an off-lead run, Horseshoe Beach is about five minutes away and is Newcastle's designated off-leash dog beach, and the Carrington foreshore along Throsby Creek gives a grassy waterfront stretch. If you are cafe-crawling, Ground Up Espresso in Carrington and Sanctum Cafe near Darby Street both extend the walk.
