Canteen Eats at MAPh

Canteen Eats is the cafe on the grounds of the Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh) at 860 Ferntree Gully Road, Wheelers Hill, set among landscaped gardens a short drive from the Monash Freeway. It turns a gallery visit into a coffee stop, and the deck-and-garden seating makes it a legitimate dog stop as well.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the outdoor deck and in the garden tables around the cafe, on lead. They are not permitted inside the cafe or the gallery spaces, with the usual exception for assistance dogs. Water bowls are often out in the outdoor area, but bring your own to be safe. There is no dedicated dog menu; the treat here is the table itself, a quiet garden seat in Melbourne's south east where your dog is not an afterthought.

Worth knowing

The cabinet does the talking: fresh baked cakes, pastries and cookies, toasted sandwiches and a signature Canteen Eats Burger, with coffee, chai and hot chocolate to match. Hours are Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and weekends 10am to 3pm, closed Mondays and public holidays in line with the museum, so this is never an early-breakfast call. Free on-site parking sits at the museum, just off the Ferntree Gully Road and Wellington Road intersection.

Make a day of it

The natural pairing is Jells Park, the 127 hectare regional park a few minutes north. Its main paths are on-lead, but the designated off-lead pockets sit on its edges: Jells Road Reserve Dog Off Leash Area on the west side of Jells Road and the Glen Waverley Golf Course Adjacent Dog Off Leash Area near Waverley Road. Lum Reserve is a third Monash option closer to the suburb's north. Walk first, gallery and burger after.
