Gather on Hay

Gather on Hay is a breakfast-and-lunch cafe set in a character building on Hay Street in West Perth, and the drawcard for dog owners is out the back: a leafy, sheltered garden well away from the street. It is the kind of quiet, shaded courtyard that suits a long sit with a settled dog rather than a grab-and-go.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcomed in the spacious garden and alfresco area at the rear, accessed through the cafe. The building interior is generally not open to pets, so the garden is your spot, and a good one: quiet, sheltered from Hay Street traffic and roomy enough for a dog to stretch out. Bring your own water bowl, especially in the warmer months and at busy times.

The vibe

The menu leans healthy breakfast and lunch with a good spread of vegetarian options, and the chilli scrambled eggs, jaffles and benedict get the regular mentions, with serving sizes that do not leave you short. Weekdays run 7am to 5pm, weekends 8am to 2pm, with weekend brunch the busiest window. Come on a weekday or early weekend if you want the garden to yourself.

The cafe is at 1222 Hay Street, West Perth. Street parking runs along Hay Street and the side streets, though much of it is paid or time-restricted during business hours, so check the signage. The Green CAT bus route along Hay Street stops within easy walking distance.

Kings Park and Botanic Garden is a short drive or a decent walk away with extensive on-leash trails, and the leafy West Perth streets nearby make a pleasant pre- or post-brunch loop.
