Rattling Red Cafe

Rattling Red Cafe occupies a restored century-old Red Rattler train carriage in the village out the back of the Tyabb Packing House antiques complex at 14 Mornington-Tyabb Road. The vintage-carriage setting, the maker shops to browse and a playground for the kids give it more of a half-day outing feel than a straight coffee stop, and dogs are welcome throughout the outdoor areas.

The dog setup

Dogs on a lead are welcome on the covered veranda and the outdoor seating around the carriage, with water bowls generally put out for visiting dogs. The historic carriage interior itself is for people, so plan on the veranda tables. The village grounds around the cafe are an on-lead wander in their own right, with antiques sheds and maker shops to loop through while the dog stretches out.

The vibe and the food

The menu is simple, well-done cafe food: breakfast, brunch, light lunches, sweet treats and solid coffee, with chips a regular call-out from reviewers. The trade runs Thursday and Friday 9am to 4pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am to 5pm, closed Monday to Wednesday, so time the trip for the back half of the week. Weekdays are the quiet window; weekends bring the antiques crowd.

Getting there and parking

The Packing House sits on Mornington-Tyabb Road between Frankston and Hastings, with ample on-site parking at the complex so the walk in with the dog is short.

For off-lead time afterwards, Hastings Foreshore Reserve's dog off-leash area is a short drive down the road, and Cypress Samuel Reserve's fenced dog park covers the fenced-run option. If you are cafe-hopping, Steamin' Mugs in Hastings and Mitch and Co Cafe in Tyabb are both close by.
