Abbey's Cottage Cafe

Abbey's Cottage Cafe sits in the Bernoth Centre on Ruthven Street, Toowoomba City, a cosy, character-filled cafe with a big gluten-free leaning and proper table service. The dog-friendly draw is its roomy undercover outdoor seating, reached straight from the centre's car park, which makes it one of the easier sit-down breakfasts to manage with a dog on the Darling Downs.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the undercover outdoor area, with flat access directly from the Bernoth Centre parking, so there is no kerb-hopping or footpath threading to reach a table. The space is generous, which gives a dog room to settle out of the flow of chairs, and water bowls are usually put out. Dogs stay in the outdoor area rather than the indoor room, and the cover means rain is not a write-off.

Worth knowing

The kitchen is known for an extensive gluten-free menu alongside the usual breakfast and lunch comforts: corn fritters, eggs benedict, hash browns and thickshakes, with Merlo coffee in the cup. Regulars also mention the resident talking parrot, which is worth knowing if your dog has opinions about birds. Hours run from 7:30am weekdays and 8am weekends, closing early to mid afternoon, and staff are repeatedly singled out for being welcoming.

The cafe is at Shop 9, 663 Ruthven Street, in the Bernoth Centre, with free on-site parking right by the cafe entrance. The Aquabird pet centre next door is handy if you need supplies mid-visit.
