Ortem

Ortem holds the corner at 15 Railway Street in the Toowoomba CBD, an industrial-styled brunch cafe in the old railway precinct near the Ruthven Street end of town. It opens 7am to 2pm Monday to Saturday and closes Sundays, with a fully licensed bar and a menu built on local Darling Downs produce.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the streetside alfresco area along Railway Street, leashed and settled under or beside the table; the indoor room stays people only. Staff regularly bring out water bowls for canine guests, and the footpath position makes arriving on a walk easy. This is a busy, social room with steady street life, so a calm dog enjoys it far more than a reactive one.

Worth knowing

The brunch menu is the draw: bacon and eggs with potato rosti, breaky bagels, eggs benedict and rotating pancake specials, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options treated as first-class citizens rather than afterthoughts. The freakshakes and chai are the indulgent end. Weekend mornings are the loudest, fullest stretch; a weekday morning or the shoulders of the brunch rush are the easy times to land a footpath table with a dog.

Getting there and parking

On-street parking runs along Railway Street and the surrounding blocks, turning over slowly at peak meal times, so allow a few extra minutes. The cafe is walkable from much of the CBD, and the heritage railway buildings nearby make for a pleasant lead wander before you eat.

Close by with the dogs

The Railway Dog Park in Queens Park is the closest off-lead run, and the larger Queens Park Dog Off Leash Area is a short drive east. Park House Cafe and Urban Grounds cover the suburb's other dog-friendly tables.
