Mayo sandwich bar

Mayo is a European-style sandwich bar on Ann Street in the Toowoomba CBD, opened by the team behind the former UVA wine bar. It is a hole-in-the-wall operation that bills itself as dog-friendly, pastry-friendly and caffeine-dependent, and the outdoor seating out front is where dogs fit in.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating area outside the small storefront, on a lead. It is a compact, busy weekday spot, so a dog that settles tucked beside the table suits it best. Bring your own bowl because the patio is standing-room-first and there is no indoor access for dogs.

The vibe and the menu

The menu is sourdough and focaccia sandwiches with proper names: The Alessandro stacks ham, swiss cheese, dijon mayo and cos lettuce, while The Schnitty pairs chicken schnitzel with pickle mayo and grated parmesan, and the Triple Threat, Hot Honey Parm and Messalina round out the board. Coffee comes with specialty options including cloud foam lattes, plus matcha, hot chocolate and sweets. The bar trades weekday mornings and into lunch, and when the bread runs out it can close early, so earlier is safer.

Getting there and parking

The address is 6 Ann Street, a short block off the Toowoomba CBD core. Street parking runs along Ann Street and the surrounding grid, though the weekday lunch window is the tightest stretch, so arrive before the midday rush for an easier park and a calm outdoor table.

Make a day of it

The off-leash area at Queens Park Dog Off Leash Area is minutes away on the Lindsay Street side, unfenced so bring a responsive dog. Laurel Bank Park is the on-lead stroll option through the gardens on the western edge of the centre. For more coffee, Ortem and Park House Cafe are both dog-friendly CBD stops.
