Think Local Community Cafe

Think Local Community Cafe is a social-enterprise coffee trailer parked at the front of the Thornbury Church of Christ on St Georges Road, pouring coffee for a cause: profits go back into local community care and food relief programs. Service comes from staff and volunteers, and because everything happens in the open air in front of the van, dogs are welcome right alongside you. It runs weekday mornings only, 6am to 1pm, closed weekends.

The dog setup

The whole seating area is outdoors on the church property, so there is no indoor divide to worry about: order at the window and stand or sit with your dog at the tables in front of the van. Keep the lead on, as the trailer sits just off the St Georges Road footpath on a busy road. There is no fenced area here, it is a grab-your-coffee-and-chat kind of stop rather than an off-lead hangout.

Worth knowing

The coffee is organic Fairtrade, roasted in Sunbury by Just Planet, and the cabinet keeps a concise menu of gourmet toasties plus rotating vegan and gluten-free muffins and cakes. On the same site, a 24/7 community pantry operates on the Smith Street side on a give-what-you-can basis, stocked with non-perishables, fresh bread, garden produce and toiletries. Reviewers consistently single out the friendly team, and the 5-star average across its small review base reflects a genuine local following.

Getting there and parking

The trailer is at 390-398 St Georges Road, Thornbury. On-site parking is limited, so use the surrounding residential streets or arrive by tram on the St Georges Road route, which stops nearby.

Close by with the dogs

For an off-lead run nearby, the Merri Park Dog Off Leash Area in Northcote is a short drive south, and within Thornbury itself you have the Mayer Park Dog Off Leash Area and Henderson Park. Darebin's default rule elsewhere, including along the Merri Creek trail, is a leash of up to 1.5 metres. For a sit-down option, Little Henri is a Thornbury local.
