The Ugly Cook

The Ugly Cook is a cosy all-day cafe on Belgrave Esplanade in Sylvania Waters, sitting between Tom Ugly's Bridge and Captain Cook's Bridge, and the reason dog owners keep coming back is the undercover backyard seating: a proper outdoor room where dogs are genuinely welcome.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor, undercover backyard area, not inside the main cafe. Access is straightforward and the space feels more like a mate's courtyard than a footpath setup. Keep your dog leashed in the seating area to respect other tables, and bring a water bowl to be safe, or ask staff.

Worth knowing

The kitchen does generous breakfast and brunch, with a reputation built on solid bacon and egg rolls, poached eggs and a haloumi burger, poured with coffee from Ruby Little beans. Hours are early and consistent: 5:30am to 2:30pm Monday to Saturday and 6:30am to 2pm Sunday, so a pre-walk feed is entirely doable.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is at 2/217 Belgrave Esplanade, Sylvania Waters. Free street parking and a free lot cover it, but weekend mornings bring a genuine hunt for a spot, so come early or park a block back and walk.

Close by with the dogs

The Sylvania Waters canal foreshore is right there for a pre- or post-breakfast wander on lead. For a secure run, the Helena Street Park Fenced Dog Park in Kirrawee has double-gated sections for small and large dogs, about ten minutes southwest. If the caffeine needs topping up on the way home, Brick Pit Espresso is up that way too.

Max: the backyard is the pick. Street tables get the esplanade traffic, the covered back area gets the breeze and the space, and a settled dog works better in the second one.
