The Local Shepparton

The Local is a small, community-minded cafe at 23 Parker Street in central Shepparton, set inside an old milk bar that Greater Shepparton council once spotlighted for exactly that quiet-revolution character. It has made its name on loaded toasties, house-baked cookies and good coffee, and it works well with a dog because the deal is simple: footpath tables out front, dogs welcome, no fuss.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor footpath tables, not inside. Staff are used to four-legged regulars and water bowls are usually on hand, though bringing your own is the safe call on busy mornings. Parker Street is a town-centre street rather than a highway, so the footpath setup is relaxed, and the cafe doubles neatly as a takeaway-and-walk stop if your dog would rather keep moving.

Worth knowing

The toasties are the signature and the menu rotates hard: the ham and cheese, chicken and pesto, tuna and chicken and avo combinations all get a mention, with specials like Nonna's meatball toastie and a Kewpie-mayo egg and bacon version appearing alongside. The loaded cookies are the other draw, and service rates highly with locals. Hours run 6:30am to 2:30pm on weekdays and 7am to 2pm on weekends, so it is a breakfast-and-lunch operation rather than an all-day one.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits on Parker Street in the town centre, with street parking out front and public car parks within a short walk. Being central, it pairs easily with a loop of the lake or a walk through the main retail blocks.

Close by with the dogs

Victoria Park Lake is a short drive away for a lakeside loop, though dogs stay on lead there, with leads no longer than three metres under Greater Shepparton rules. For proper off-leash time, the city's two fenced dog parks are the go: the Shepparton Fenced Dog Park at Princess Park, which has separate large and small dog sections and agility equipment, and the fenced off-leash area at Ducat Reserve.
