Good George

Good George sits inside Parramatta Park near the O'Connell Street entrance by the George Street Gatehouse, in a rustic garden setting ringed by grass and trees. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables on a lead, which makes it one of the simplest dog stops in Parramatta: you can fold a coffee into a park walk without crossing a road. It opens 6:30am with a 2pm close most days, 2:30pm Wednesdays.

The dog setup

Seating is mostly outdoor and the cafe has long catered to walking regulars: water bowls go out for dogs and there is a history of puppacinos at the counter. Because the cafe is inside the park itself, Sydney's rules for the parklands apply on your way in, so keep the lead on and steer clear of the playground zones.

The menu

This is casual, hearty breakfast-and-brunch territory: bacon and egg rolls, freshly made gozleme, toasties, granola and falafel plates, with barista coffee to take walking. There is also a sticky chai that regulars reorder. It is a quick-order park kiosk by feel rather than a sit-down restaurant, which suits a dog at your feet.

Getting there and parking

Enter the park from O'Connell Street; there is a large free car park adjacent to the cafe inside the park grounds, and you can also walk in along the park trails from the river side. Weekends fill as the park gets busy, so an early arrival is the calm version.

Make a day of it

The walk options are the reason to come. Parramatta Park to Rydalmere Ferry Wharf starts effectively at the doorstep and follows the river on shared paths. If your dog needs an off-lead run after all the on-lead walking, Dan Mahoney Reserve's fenced park in North Parramatta is a short drive.
