Cafe Once Upon a Time sits at 46 Denman Parade directly opposite Normanhurst station, a small retro-styled cafe that answers the dog question plainly: friendly dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating. It has become the natural coffee stop for dog walkers in this corner of the Upper North Shore.

The dog setup

Dogs join you at the outdoor tables on a lead, settled beside the chair rather than working the footpath. Water bowls are not always out, so a quick ask at the counter or your own portable bowl is the safe play. The outdoor area is the whole dog proposition here; it is a compact cafe, and the footpath seats are the first to go on weekend mornings, so arrive early or expect a short wait for a table your dog can share.

The vibe

Quaint, nostalgic and quietly good at breakfast. The retro fit-out gets as many mentions as the food, which runs to eggs benedict with serious topping options, loaded acai bowls, caramel french toast, a proper big breakfast and steak sandwiches, all washed down with solid specialty coffee. Doors open from 6am on weekdays and 7am on weekends, closing mid-afternoon around 2:30pm.

Getting there and parking

The station platform is across the road, which makes this an easy train trip, and free street parking runs along Denman Parade and the surrounding residential streets for drivers.

While you're out there

Normanhurst Park and its oval suit a leashed leg-stretch nearby, and the Thornleigh dog park and Frances O'Brien dog park in Wahroonga cover the off-lead sessions either side.
