Laratinga Wetlands

Laratinga Wetlands is a constructed wetland on the edge of Mount Barker, built as a water reclamation site and now one of the Adelaide Hills' best easy walks. Flat gravel and bitumen paths loop past ponds, boardwalks and bird hides, with over 150 recorded bird species. It is a lead-on walk, not an off-leash run, and that is the point: the rules exist to protect the wildlife.

The rules. Dogs must be on a lead at all times inside the wetlands, and you should keep to the formed pathways. The lead rule matters most in bird breeding season, when nesting birds are easily disturbed. For an off-leash run, the fenced Barka Park is right next door, reached from Zanker Drive or Bluestone Drive.

What's there. Sealed and gravel (dolomite) paths suit prams and wheelchairs, with seating roughly every 300 metres. There is an environmentally friendly toilet, a picnic area, barbecues, shelters and several bird hides. Dog-bag dispensers and water are available near the Barka Park end.

Getting there. The main car park and entrance is on Zanker Drive, with free parking; there is a second entrance on Bluestone Drive. It is a short distance from the township centre, so it is an easy add-on to a Mount Barker visit.

Sunny weekends and public holiday mornings are busiest. Weekdays, early mornings or late afternoons are quietest. Being a reclamation site rather than a coastal wetland, there are no tides; water levels just rise after rain. Good for steady, social walkers who like a bit of birdlife with their stroll.
