Beck's is a newer cafe in the heart of Kiama, run by two brothers around a surf-culture theme, and it has quickly built a reputation for strong coffee and sunny, easygoing service. It opens early seven days a week, which makes it a reliable first stop before a beach walk with the dog.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the bright outdoor seating area out front. As with most cafes, indoors is people only. There is no formal water-bowl service to count on, so bring your own bowl, especially on a warm morning.

Known for. House-roasted beans and a serious focus on coffee, plus toasties, banana bread and brunch plates. The fit-out leans into surf culture with a small retail corner, and reviews keep coming back to the friendly, polite welcome.

Getting there and parking. It is in the main township, a short walk from the centre of Kiama. Street parking is available in the surrounding streets and turns over fairly quickly outside peak times.

Nearby with the dogs. The harbour and coastal walking paths are close by for a scenic loop, and Kiama Surf Beach is a short walk or quick drive. Check the council signage at each beach for current on-lead and off-lead times before you let the lead off.

Get there soon after opening for the calmest tables and the best of the morning sun. Good for an early coffee on the way to the water.
