Bread, Espresso & Gwynneville

Bread, Espresso & is a sourdough bakery cafe at Unit 1/4 Murphys Avenue in Gwynneville, a suburb wedged between Wollongong's university side and the city. It opens 6:30am on weekdays and 7am on weekends and wraps up by 2:30pm, built around house-baked bread, pastries and a serious flat white rather than an all-day brunch menu.

The dog setup

The regulars come for the sourdough toasties, cinnamon buns and croissants, with loaves to take home from the bread shelf alongside the espresso. It does not take reservations and it gets busy, so expect a short wait on weekend mornings; arrive early if a dog-friendly outdoor table is the plan.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits on Murphys Avenue off the Princes Highway, with free street parking on the surrounding residential streets. Parking fills quickly on weekend mornings, so either come early or plan on a short walk from a side street.

Close by with the dogs

The nearest proper off-leash beach is Coniston Dog Beach, a short drive south of the city, where the Wollongong City Council green zone south of Bank Street allows off-leash dogs at any hour. The council's rules to remember: dogs stay leashed on access paths and car parks, are kept out of patrolled beach areas and playgrounds, and you need to carry bags and keep your dog under effective control. For a grassy run instead, the Figtree off-leash dog area is a few minutes inland with open grass and a shallow creek dogs can splash in.
