DY Local is a neighbourhood cafe on Oaks Ave in central Dee Why, a short walk back from the beachfront. It has the feel of a locals-only corner that visitors stumble into, and the outdoor tables out front are what make it work with a dog in tow on the way to or from the sand.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the footpath seating along the front of the cafe. Inside stays for people only, with assistance dogs the usual exception under NSW food rules. The regulars bring their dogs often enough that the staff barely blink, but carry your own water bowl to be sure of one on a warm morning.

Worth knowing

The draw is the coffee and a no-nonsense breakfast run: bacon and egg rolls, acai bowls, matcha and proper latte art. Portions come up again and again as generous, so it covers a post-swim appetite without a second order. Service gets steady praise for being quick and friendly, which matters when you are holding a leash and a flat white at the same time.

Getting there and parking

Find it at Shop 1, 23 Oaks Ave, open from 6am on weekdays and 7am on weekends, closing mid-afternoon. Street parking on Oaks Ave fills through the morning rush, so the council car parks around the Dee Why town centre are the safer bet. It is an easy flat walk from the beachfront, so you can leave the car once and do the whole outing on foot.

Close by with the dogs
