Corner House Newcastle

Corner House is a relaxed neighbourhood cafe at 29 Union Street in Cooks Hill, five minutes from Darby Street and central Newcastle, and it has built its reputation on a solid brunch menu and a genuinely welcoming attitude toward dogs. Even its review topics carry the dog-friendly tag, which is not something every cafe earns.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating on the footpath and the small courtyard out front; the interior is people-only. Water bowls are usually out, though a collapsible bowl helps at busy times, and the footpath seating is close-set, so keep your dog leashed and settled beside the table. Hours run 5:30am to 2pm weekdays and 6am to 1pm Saturday, closing Sundays.

The food

The chicken toastie is the signature and the rotating gourmet toasties do steady work alongside fresh pastries. Brunch covers a good gluten-free and vegetarian range, and the coffee comes out fast, which suits the morning crowd walking down from the hill. It is a cosy, local-feeling room where regulars clearly dominate the tables.

Getting there and close by

Street parking on Union Street and the surrounding residential streets gets competitive on weekend brunch mornings, and the walk from Darby Street is easy. For the off-lead stretch, the King Edward Park Off-leash Area sits in the upper section of the park near the summit, with the lower promenades on-lead. If you want to make a morning of it, Newcastle Dogs Beach is the dedicated off-leash beach a short drive east, and Sanctum Cafe is the other Cooks Hill coffee stop.
