The Kitchen Container

The Kitchen Container is a compact beachside takeaway on Old Post Office Lane in Carrum, a literal shipping container kiosk a short walk from Carrum Station and the sand. It is a grab-and-go stop rather than a sit-down cafe, and that is exactly the point when you are halfway through a foreshore walk with the dog.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor courtyard and footpath seating; the container itself is a service area, so plan on sitting or standing outside with your dog on lead and clear of other diners. Bring your own water bowl. Hours run 7am to about 12:45pm on weekdays and 8am on weekends, with evening service Wednesday to Saturday, so it is a morning-coffee-and-breakfast roll operation more than an all-day cafe.

What to order

The reputation is built on affordability and speed: bacon and egg sandwiches, sausage and egg muffins, toasties and coffee at prices that make regular visits easy. The hamburger with the lot is the signature, hot jam donuts get their own fan base, and there are juices, shakes and ice cream for the beach-side extras. Vegetarian and vegan options are covered too.

The beach out front

Carrum Dog Beach is essentially across the road. Under City of Kingston rules the sand shifts with the seasons: from November to March dogs are banned from the sand between 10am and 7:30pm, while from April to October off-lead is allowed at all times south of Old Post Office Lane. Early or late in the day dodges both the summer ban and the queue.

For a proper run, the fenced Roy Dore Reserve Fenced Dog Park is a short walk, and the Patterson River Loop suits a longer on-lead circuit. Gretel Coffee Roasters is the local pick if you want a sit-down specialty coffee instead.
