This is a 5.8 km flat loop around the mouth of the Patterson River at Carrum, and it is about as easy as a walk of that length gets. No hills, no rough ground, and water on one side for most of it.
The walk. Rated easy and timed at an hour to an hour and a half for the full 5.8 km circuit. The surface is a mix of sealed shared path and compacted gravel, flat throughout, and because it is a genuine loop you finish where you started without doubling back. The scenery shifts from river mouth and moored boats to wetland and back again.
The rules. Kingston City Council manages the trail and dogs are welcome on lead along its length. Keep off the fringing wetland vegetation, which is fenced or signed in places, and use the bins at the main access points.
Water. The river is tidal and the banks are mostly steep or muddy rather than swimmable, so treat this as a sniffing walk rather than a swimming one. Carry water, because shade is limited along the open sections.
Hazards. Snakes are active along the river and wetland margins in warm weather, which is the main reason to keep to the formed path from spring through summer. The trail is also popular with cyclists, and the shared sections get busy on weekend mornings.

Getting there. Carrum Station on the Frankston line is a short walk from the trail, which makes this one of the easier trail walks to reach without a car. Driving, there are car parks off Launching Way near the river mouth.
Nearby with the dogs. Roy Dore Reserve is a fenced dog park close by for a proper off-lead run, and Chelsea Bicentennial Park is the next one south. Gretel Coffee Roasters and The Kitchen Container are both near the Carrum end.
When to go. Early morning or late afternoon, especially in summer when the exposed sections get hot. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends. Good for seniors and for dogs who want distance without gradient.
