Patterson River Loop via Dandenong Creek Trail

The Patterson River Loop via Dandenong Creek Trail is a 5.8 kilometre flat circuit around the river mouth at Carrum, on Melbourne's bayside. No hills, no rough ground, and water alongside for most of the way, it is about as easy as a walk of this length gets and a reliable on-lead outing for dogs of any age.

The walk

Time it at an hour to an hour and a half for the full circuit. The surface mixes sealed shared path and compacted gravel, flat throughout, and because it is a genuine loop you finish where you started without doubling back. The scenery shifts as you go: the river mouth and moored boats, rows of pelicans on the sandbars, wetland on the inner sections, then back to the water. Low tide exposes the mudflats, which are a scent buffet for dogs even if they never get close.

Leash status

Dogs are welcome on lead along the entire loop under Kingston City Council rules, and this is an on-lead trail the whole way. Keep dogs out of the fringing wetland vegetation, which is fenced or signed in places, and use the bins at the main access points. Water and terrain

The river is tidal and the banks are mostly steep or muddy rather than swimmable, so treat this as a sniffing walk rather than a swimming one. Carry your own water, because shade is limited along the open sections and the river path can be exposed on hot days.

Hazards

Snakes are active along the river and wetland margins in warm weather, the main reason to keep to the formed path from spring through summer. The trail is shared with cyclists, and the weekend morning rush is real, so keep left and keep the lead short when bikes pass. After rain, some gravel sections hold puddles.

Pepsi: mudflats at low tide smell magnificent. Budget ten extra minutes for the sniffing and a towel for the car.

Getting there and parking

Carrum Station on the Frankston line is a short walk from the trail, making this one of the easier trail walks to reach without a car. Driving, use the car parks off Launching Way near the river mouth. The loop is pram and bike friendly throughout.

When to go

Weekday mornings are quietest; weekend mornings bring the cyclist traffic. In summer, go early before the heat on the open sections. Low tide is the best window for dogs who care about smells.
