LOB Cafe

LOB Cafe, short for Love of Beans, is the early-opening local cafe at 8 Jubilee Avenue in the Carlton shopping precinct, a short walk from Carlton Station. It runs street-side outdoor dining and welcomes dogs at those tables, which makes it a handy mid-walk coffee stop in Sydney's St George area.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor street tables out the front. It is a compact suburban footpath setup, so a dog settled close beside your chair works better than letting it sprawl when the strip is busy. Bring your own water rather than assuming a bowl is on hand, and grab a takeaway if the footpath tables are all taken.

Coffee and the cabinet

This is a proper locals' cafe: a 4.6 rating across a few hundred reviews, owner Allen behind the counter, and a running tab of regulars on loyalty cards. The menu covers breakfast and lunch rolls plus the baked cabinet, with banana bread, homemade cakes and freshly squeezed juice among what people order most. Vegan options are available. Hours run from 5am on weekdays to mid-afternoon, with slightly later weekend starts, and the kitchen winds up around 2:30pm.

Getting there and parking

Jubilee Avenue sits just off the Princes Highway in Carlton, with Carlton Station around the corner for anyone arriving by train. Street parking runs through the surrounding blocks and the strip itself. For a proper leg-stretch afterwards, head a few minutes east towards the water.

Close by with the dogs

The Sans Souci Beach Walking Path is the natural pre-coffee walk along the Georges River foreshore, and the Frys Reserve fenced dog park at Kogarah is a short drive north. Sweet Marie's Cafe is another dog-friendly coffee option on the same strip.
