Maggio's Cafe

Maggio's is a family-run Italian cafe, deli and bakery on Miller Street in Cammeray, a long-standing North Shore institution for espresso, cannoli and gelato. Dogs are welcome at the undercover footpath tables out front, so a proper Italian breakfast with your dog settled beside you is very much on the menu.

The dog setup

The dog territory is the outdoor seating that spills along the Miller Street strip. Tables sit on the footpath under cover, with room for a dog on lead beside you, and staff are accommodating with local regulars, often bringing out a water bowl. Inside the cafe and the bakery counter next door is people-only, which is standard health regulation rather than a hostess choice. The covered seating takes the edge off Sydney's rain, so this works year-round.

The vibe

The cabinet is the drawcard: cannoli, bomboloni, cakes and gelato, alongside corn fritters, eggs benedict and baguettes for the savoury crowd. It is busy on weekends, when the strip fills with locals, and the footpath tables go first. The cafe opens 6am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 6am to 3pm on weekends, which makes it an easy early call before the crowds.

Pepsi: arrive before 8am on a Saturday. My humans got a corner table, a ricotta cheesecake, and I got the last cool patch of footpath before the sun swung around.

Getting there and parking

Maggio's is at Suite 4, 457 Miller Street, Cammeray, with free street parking along Miller Street and the side streets, though it thins out at peak weekend times. It is an easy walk from most of Cammeray's residential streets.

Pair it with

Cafe Carino sits by the water at Tunks Park for a post-walk coffee, and The Alchemist Espresso is a nearby backup with covered outdoor tables. For a leg stretch, the Primrose Park Walking Track is a short drive away.
