clinker

clinker is a small owner-run coffee bar at 5 Edward Street, one street back from Sydney Road in Brunswick. It is a tight, focused room built around serious espresso and batch brew, run by a solo barista known for speed and consistency, and it is a genuine inside-dogs venue: well-behaved dogs come in with you rather than waiting on the footpath.

Dogs are welcome inside the cosy space, with a small casual area out front for a quick stop, and the counter stocks dog biscuits so the four-legged half of the order is covered. Because the room is compact, this works best for a calm dog that is comfortable in close quarters with other customers. The focus is the coffee: a streamlined espresso menu with rotating single origins, well-regarded batch brew, chai and hot chocolate, and pastries and cinnamon scrolls in the cabinet, often from local favourites like Choukette. Hours are 7am to 2pm Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays, so it is a morning ritual spot rather than an afternoon one.

Getting there and parking

Edward Street is a short walk from the 19 tram on Sydney Road and Jewell Station on the Upfield line, so arriving without a car is easy. Street parking on Edward Street and nearby blocks is competitive through the morning peak; coming by tram or on foot with the dog is the low-friction option.

Gilpin Park Fenced Dog Park is the obvious run beforehand or after: a fully enclosed space with dual-gate entry and separate sections for large and small dogs on Albert Street.
