Middle Ground

Middle Ground is a cafe and event space on the Old Princes Highway in Beaconsfield, popular for its coffee, desserts and a courtyard that gets a solid weekend crowd. Leashed dogs are welcome outdoors.

The dog setup

Leashed dogs are permitted in the outdoor seating and courtyard areas, which tend to be the liveliest part of the venue on weekends. Indoor seating is not the place for a dog, in line with standard food-service rules, so pack a mat or settle for the courtyard chairs on cooler mornings. Staff are generally accommodating, though it is worth confirming water availability when you order rather than assuming a bowl is out.

Worth knowing

The coffee is strong and the dessert selection is well regarded, but the kitchen goes beyond cafe standards: lamb dumplings, the bulgogi sub, croquettes and gluten-free options broaden the menu. Hours run from 6am weekdays and 8am weekends through to 3pm daily. The courtyard doubles as a local event space on busier weekends, so a calm dog copes best then.

Getting there and parking

Find it at Shop 1, 52-62 Old Princes Highway, a short walk from Beaconsfield railway station. On-street parking is available along the highway and in the nearby side streets.

Close by with the dogs

Daydreamers Cafe and Uncle Barneys Hot Dogs & Donuts are both close by on the same strip. Hammerwood Green Reserve is the suburb's off-lead option, or Akoonah Park at Berwick gives you a bigger run. Cardinia Shire asks for effective control and a leash carried at all times.
