THE DOSE ALEXANDRIA

The Dose is a small, warmly decorated cafe on Ralph Street in Alexandria that has built its reputation on two things: serious coffee and an easy welcome for dogs. Locals with dogs on leads make it a regular morning stop, and the staff have been known to dress lattes with dog-face latte art so nobody in the photo feels left out. It opens early on weekdays, from 6am, and runs until 4pm Monday to Friday, with shorter weekend service from 7am or 7:30am.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables along Ralph Street, and visitors regularly report dogs being accommodated inside too, so the cafe is friendlier than most on that front. There are spots to tie up a lead close to the seating, and well-behaved dogs are very much the norm here. As always, keep your dog on a lead and beside the table; the footpath is shared with passing locals and prams. Ask for a babycino for the dog, a small treat the kitchen is happy to serve while you order the real thing.

The vibe

The room is cosy with playful dog-themed touches, and the menu leans indulgent: the blueberry cream cheese bagel, corn fritters, chicken schnitzel sandwich and breakfast wraps do the heavy lifting. On the drinks side, the signature house coffee, dirty matcha and an earl grey cold brew draw the attention, alongside some of the more detailed latte art in the inner south.

Getting there and parking

Find The Dose at 19 Ralph Street, Alexandria, in the mixed industrial and residential pocket between Erskineville and St Peters. Free street parking is generally available on Ralph Street and surrounding streets, though weekday mornings tighten up as the workshops open. St Peters station is an easy walk if you are coming by train.

Close by with the dogs

Sydney Park is the obvious next stop, a short trip down the road with large off-leash areas, rolling hills and a dog paddling pool near the Barwon Park Road side (dogs stay on leash around the wetlands, ovals and playgrounds). On the same street as the cafe, Cantine Verte is another dog-friendly option, and Bohaus Cafe and Harry Noble Reserve in Erskineville are both close.
