Mudjimba Dog Beach

Dog Beach at Mudjimba, on the northern end of Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast, is one of the region's best off-leash stretches: a wide, quiet run of sand between the surf and the Maroochy River mouth with no time restrictions on the leash rules. It sits well clear of the busier patrolled beaches to the south, so it stays genuinely uncrowded even on weekends.

Leash status

Under Sunshine Coast Council rules, off-leash is permitted at all times on the ocean side, from about 140 metres north of Beach Access 132 near the end of North Shore Road, down to the Maroochy River mouth. The freedom has boundaries: dogs must be leashed in the car park, on the walking paths and in the surrounding parkland, and they are not allowed at all in the dunal conservation reserve between the beach and the river. On the river side, keep dogs leashed west of beach access 136. Effective voice control is expected everywhere, leash or not.

Water and terrain

The sand flats are broad and mostly flat, running out towards Pincushion Island, a rocky outcrop that is walkable at low tide. Shade is scarce, so a pop-up shelter or umbrella is worth carrying in summer. The river mouth has genuine current that picks up with the tide, which changes the character of the swimming from gentle shallows to moving water depending on the hour.

Max: keep dogs close near the river mouth. The current there is stronger than it looks and it is not the place to let a strong swimmer freelance.

Getting there and parking

From Ocean Drive, turn onto North Shore Road and follow it to the end for the large free car park and beach access points 131 to 136. Public transport is limited: the nearest Translink stops are on Ocean Drive, with a fair walk from there to the sand. It is also reachable on foot or by bike via the coastal path from the Twin Waters resort precinct. There is a lifeguard tower, picnic shelters and public toilets near the main entrance, but no tap or dog wash at the off-leash stretch, so bring your own water and a bowl.

When to go

Go early morning or late afternoon to dodge the heat and have the sand flats mostly to yourself. Weekends draw more locals but it rarely feels packed. Check the tide times before you go, since low tide is what opens up the walk out to Pincushion Island. This beach suits dogs that are confident off-leash and owners happy to watch the water near the river mouth.
