Nobbys Beach

Nobbys Beach is Port Macquarie's go-to off-leash dog beach: a sheltered 400-metre stretch tucked between Nobby Head to the north and the rocks at the southern end of Flynns Beach, off Pacific Drive. The draw is simple, dogs can run and swim off-leash here, and it sits right on the scenic coastal walk.

The rules. Dogs are permitted off-leash but must stay under effective control, meaning voice command or within sight. The off-leash zone runs between the northern side of Nobby Head and the southern rocky boundary of Flynns Beach. Pick up after your dog (bag stations are usually provided), keep dogs clear of any patrolled or flagged swimming area, and stay at least 10 metres from children's play equipment. Always check the current council signage on the day, as boundaries and conditions can change.

The water and terrain. It is a relatively sheltered beach, which makes it calmer than the open surf beaches for a swim. Low tide opens up a wide band of firm sand, while high tide squeezes the usable area considerably, so time a visit around the tide if you want room to throw a ball. Shade is limited, so bring your own on hot days.

What's there. A small car park sits off the reserve, with easy walk-down access onto the sand. Dog water bubblers are generally available in the reserve, and toilets are nearby at Flynns Beach.

Getting there. From the town centre, take Lord Street to Pacific Drive; it is roughly 5 minutes from the CBD. The car park is small and fills fast on summer mornings and weekends, so arrive early or be ready to park on the surrounding streets.

Watch-outs. With limited shade the sand heats up in summer, so check it against your hand before letting a dog run, and carry water. As a popular off-leash beach it gets busy, so a dog with reliable recall makes for an easier visit.

Nearby with the dogs. Sandbox near Flynns Beach is a short walk for a coffee with sandy paws, and Macquarie Barracks Motor Inn is about ten minutes away for a pet-friendly bed. Pepsi: the sheltered water here is a brilliant first swim for a dog still working out whether it likes the ocean, gentler than the open surf beaches.

When to go. Aim for a low-tide weekday morning for the most sand and the fewest crowds; weekends and school holidays are busiest. Good for confident swimmers and big runners who have solid recall.
