Woorim Dog Beach (Southern Stretch)

The southern stretch of Woorim Beach is one of Bribie Island's best-known off-leash dog beaches, running from Beach Access 19 at Lowry Street south towards Bongaree. It is open sand and ocean surf with views across to Moreton Island, and it is the stretch most locals mean when they say they are taking the dog to Woorim.

Leash status

Dogs can run off-leash on the sand and in the water from Access 19 southwards to the marked sign. Between the car park and that sign, the lead stays on. Dunes and vegetated areas are strictly off-limits, and dogs are not allowed in the children's playground or the picnic and barbecue areas. Effective voice control applies the whole time, and carrying clean-up bags is mandatory. Rangers do patrol this stretch, and the on-leash zone near the car park is where people most often get caught out, so stick close to Access 19 until you see the signage.

Water and terrain

This is an ocean-facing beach, so expect real surf rather than flat water; confident swimmers get the best of it and cautious dogs can play in the shallows. Low tide opens the widest run of sand and is the best time for a long fetch session. The dune line is fenced and vegetated, so keep the game out on the open beach.

Max: time it for low tide and the beach triples in width. The run from the sign back to Access 19 is the longest off-leash sprint on the island.

Getting there and parking

From Brisbane it is about an hour via the M1 and Bribie Island Road, following signs to Woorim on the island's ocean side. Free parking sits at the end of Lowry Street, or near the golf course if the main car park is full. At the main entry points you will find a water fountain for people and dogs, a hose for rinsing sand off after a swim, and waste bags provided.

When to go

Go early morning or late afternoon on weekends to beat the crowds, and aim for low tide for the widest sand. Summer middays are hot with little natural shade, so bring water and pick a spot with a bit of breeze.
